The 2021 growing season in Napa Valley was marked by drought conditions and a warm, dry summer, resulting in smaller berries with exceptional concentration. On Howell Mountain, the elevation and cooler nights preserved acidity while allowing for slow, even ripening—yielding wines of depth, structure, and remarkable precision.
Vineyard
Sourced from a high-elevation site at 1,700 feet on Howell Mountain, this vineyard sits above the fog line, where intense արև sunlight and volcanic soils shape a powerful yet refined expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. The rugged terrain and natural drainage contribute to low yields and concentrated fruit, defining the mountain character.
Winemaking
Crafted with a commitment to structure and elegance, this wine was aged for 28 months in 100% French oak barrels, integrating depth with finesse. The extended élevage enhances complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit.
Tasting Notes
A striking and deeply layered Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Fire Horse opens with aromas of blackcurrant, wild blackberry, and mountain blueberry, intertwined with crushed rock, graphite, and hints of dried sage. Subtle notes of cedar, dark cocoa, and espresso emerge from its time in French oak.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet composed—dense, finely structured tannins frame a core of concentrated dark fruit. The signature Howell Mountain intensity is balanced by lifted acidity and a refined texture, leading to a long, resonant finish marked by mineral tension and lingering spice.
